Co-Founding Chief Technology Officer (CTO)
Job Description
Lead the build-out of Ozyntel’s hybrid human-AI intelligence platform for systemic change, marrying rigorous ethics with practical impact.
Why Ozyntel?
Ozyntel is building a trusted human‑AI intelligence platform to help mission‑driven organisations make better, positively impactful decisions on complex sustainability, climate and transformation challenges.
We exist to close the infrastructure and resourcing gap between those accelerating extraction and division, and those fighting for regeneration and justice.
We build trusted human–AI partnerships for organisations who carry real responsibility for people and planet - helping them cleave through complexity, and act with poise and confidence.
Our work is grounded in years of transdisciplinary action research and hands-on practice with movements, universities, and impact‑driven organisations; we build on this with continuously updated evidence for traceable recommendations.
We focus on high‑stakes contexts where decisions shape communities, ecosystems, and public institutions. “Black box” AI is not acceptable.
Our platform is designed to be explainable and accountable to non‑technical partners who share the consequences of those decisions with us - making Ozyntel a long‑term ally, not just a tool.
Role & Responsibilities
We are looking for a co-founding CTO who will own the technical vision and execution of our platform from day one. You will be responsible for designing, building, and scaling an AI-driven decision support product, working closely with product, strategy, and external stakeholders to ensure the system solves real-world sustainability challenges.
This is a hands-on role in an early-stage startup. You will make pragmatic trade-offs, ship early versions quickly, and set the technical foundations for long-term reliability and trust.
-
Own the end-to-end technical architecture of the platform, including data ingestion, orchestration, inference, and feedback loops
Select and evolve a pragmatic tech stack that balances speed, cost, and long-term maintainability
Evaluate and work within JVM- or TypeScript-based ecosystems where appropriate
-
Lead development of a modern, reliable web application
Work closely with the COO and CSO to define product structure, demos, and roadmap
Translate user and stakeholder needs into clear technical requirements and workflows
Implement transparency features such as explanations, verification steps, and audit trails
-
Design and maintain pipelines for document, web, and structured data
Integrate and evaluate LLMs and AI components where they deliver real value
Optimize for cost and performance through model selection, distillation, or smaller models
Set up evaluation frameworks to track accuracy, reliability, and bias over time
-
Establish a solid security baseline and protect sensitive customer data
Plan for EU-aligned data residency and evolving AI governance requirements
-
Build and lead a small, high-quality engineering team
Set coding standards, review processes, and technical best practices
Collaborate closely with founders, domain experts, and external advisors
Represent the technical perspective in external discussions, events, and partnerships when relevant
Core Qualifications
● Several years building production web applications and data/AI systems, with demonstrable experience leading small teams or architecture efforts.
● Strong modern front‑end experience: React.js, and Next.js or TanStack Start.
● Back‑end proficiency: Node/TypeScript with frameworks such as Hono.js or equivalent
● AI product experience: integrating Vercel’s AI SDKs for chat/agents, retrieval‑augmented features, evaluation, and observability.
● Payments and platform basics: Stripe integration, permission models, multi‑tenant considerations.
● Data layer: Postgres as primary store, familiarity with vector search options, schema design, and migrations.
● DevOps: containerization, CI/CD, logging/metrics/tracing, performance and cost optimization.
● Evidence of craft: open‑source contributions and/or high‑quality past projects you can walk us through.
Who you are
Comfortable explaining technical trade‑offs to non‑technical stakeholders and incorporating their perspectives into architecture and product decisions in a participative, co-creative way in line with our core action research methodology.
Experience collaborating across disciplines (e.g. sustainability, climate, policy, social impact, civil society) and working on messy, real‑world coordination problems.
Strong communication and interpersonal skills: you listen carefully, give clear feedback, and help create a psychologically safe environment with high standards.
Motivated by people‑ and planet‑first outcomes and thoughtful and rigorous about the ethical implications of AI systems in complex social contexts.
Build technology that actually matters
You’ll help create an AI platform focused on better decisions for sustainability, public interest, and long-term transformation. Impact isn’t a side effect here — it’s the core product goal.
Own a hard, meaningful systems problem
You’ll design and evolve the technical backbone for high-stakes, human-centred decision support — from data pipelines and evaluation to verification and explainability. This is real infrastructure that organisations need to trust.
Founder-level ownership and autonomy
As a co-founder, you’ll not only have shares, but also real decision-making power over architecture, tooling, and technical direction. Early choices will shape the company for years — and you’ll be the one making them.
Modern stack, real freedom
We aim for a high-productivity, modern setup (TypeScript-first, clean architecture, strong CI/CD). You’ll shape standards, architecture, and workflows as the product and team grow.
Work closely with real-world users
You’ll collaborate directly with practitioners in sustainability, policy, and research to understand constraints and design practical solutions — not abstract demos.
A values-driven, high-trust founding team
You’ll join a small, committed group that values clarity, respect, and constructive challenge. We assume competence, communicate openly, and care about how we build — not just what we build.
Support without micromanagement
You’ll work closely with the other founders and advisors on strategy, hiring, and technical decisions, with space to bring in external expertise where it strengthens the product.
